SS and MS were both unemployed and homeless when they entered the Master Leasing Program. They were referred through the Lycoming-Clinton System of Care. They had recently obtained unexpected, emergency custody of MS’s son, MTS, age eight, due to neglect and abuse by his biological mother. SS was also undergoing treatments for cancer. Both SS and MS had criminal backgrounds and substance abuse issues. SS also suffers with her mental health. They remained substance free throughout the program, SS’s mental health is stable, and they have been crime-free.
Once housed, many agencies came into play to assist this family in becoming self-sufficient and successful. MTS demonstrated severe behavioral issues, had untreated mental health concerns, and functioned at well-below age-appropriate level. Diakon, Community Services Group, Lycoming-Clinton Children and Youth, HOPE Enterprises, Williamsport Area School District and Lycoming-Clinton MHID have all played a part in supporting and aiding them in their journey. It was a long and challenging road full of tears, pain, hopelessness, and defeat but ended with joy, acceptance, success, a feeling of being safe, and family bond that has become unbelievably strong.
Today the sun shines a little brighter on them. SS is now cancer free, employed full-time, no longer needs or collects SSI, and has finally been accepted as mom to MTS. MS is also employed full-time. MTS is still adjusting to “normal” but has services in place that are helping him with his education, behavioral challenges, anger, mental health, and previous trauma. This family is a true testament to love, perseverance, and overcoming barriers. They had their own individual issues but supported one another and became the advocates, protectors, safe space, and family MTS so desperately needed.
